AI SEO for law firms · why it matters

AI SEO for law firms:
be the firm the answer names.

Legal is the most expensive click on the internet and the vertical where AI answers replace the click fastest. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google AI who to call after a crash or a DWI, two or three firms get named. We scanned 84 North Carolina firms that already rank on Google. The average AI visibility score was 55, and every single one lacked an AI crawler policy.

Why AI SEO matters for law firms

Legal questions are exactly the kind people now ask an AI first: they are private, urgent, and hard to phrase as a keyword. "Do I need a lawyer if the other driver admitted fault?" gets a paragraph from ChatGPT and, increasingly, a short list of firms. Google's AI Mode does the same with agentic booking on the way. The firm that is legible to the machine gets the consultation; the one that only ranks gets the click that Pew found happens about half as often when a summary is present (Pew Research Center, "Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears" (Jul 2025)).

The data says the field is open. In August 2026 we scanned 84 NC firms pulled from Google's organic top 25 for high-intent criminal defense, family law and workers' compensation searches. These are firms already winning at SEO. Their average AI visibility score was 55 out of 100, the median 52.5, and 53 of 84 scored under 60 (DiamondBack Advertising, "The State of AI Search in Legal" (84 NC law firms, Aug 2026)).

What people actually ask

Real question shapes we have heard, seen in our clients' analytics, or used in scans for law firms. Ask them yourself in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and write down who gets named; that is the scoreboard. The prompt kit builds them for your own business and city.

  • Who is the best DWI lawyer in Greensboro, NC?
  • How much does a divorce lawyer cost in North Carolina?
  • Do I need a lawyer for a car accident if the other driver admitted fault?
  • Which workers' comp attorneys in Winston-Salem offer free consultations?
  • What should I ask a criminal defense attorney before hiring them?
  • Tell me about [firm name].
What the engines need from a law firm site

The specific signals

Schema types that exist

LegalService or Attorney (both LocalBusiness subtypes) sitewide, plus one Service node per practice-area page. Individual attorney pages get Person with jobTitle, bar admissions and worksFor.

Practice-area pages that answer

One page per practice area, opening with the question a client asks and a direct answer: what it costs, how long it takes, what happens first. Engines quote the answer, not the wind-up.

Credentials in text, not badges

Bar admissions, board certifications, years, and the specific courts. A logo wall is invisible; a sentence with a certification body is a citable fact.

Reviews the crawler can read

Google reviews visible in the HTML, answered, and marked up with a real aggregateRating. 82 percent of the firms we scanned had no review markup at all.

One firm, one identity

Same name, address and phone on the site, the Google Business Profile, Avvo, Justia and the state bar listing. 81 percent of scanned firms failed NAP consistency.

The advertising line

State bar advertising rules apply to a page an AI quotes just as they do to a billboard. No guarantees, no superlatives you cannot substantiate, results language handled the way your bar requires.

The install for law firms, step by step

The same four layers as every install (the complete guide explains them), in the order that works for this vertical:

  1. Open robots.txt and any firewall to the search agents. Every firm in the study failed this check, which means the first firm to pass it stands alone.
  2. Install the sitewide LegalService or Attorney block with address, phone, hours, sameAs to the Business Profile and bar listings.
  3. Add a Service node and a five-question FAQ with FAQPage markup to each practice-area page.
  4. Rewrite each practice-area opening so the first sentence answers the question in the heading.
  5. Put attorney credentials in text on attorney pages, with Person schema.
  6. Get the reviews into the HTML and mark up the real rating. Start a review-request habit.
  7. Fix NAP across the site, Business Profile and legal directories.
  8. Publish llms.txt. Then ask the engines the six prompts above and record who is named. Rescan.

What we have measured

Our legal research is the proof for this vertical: 84 firms scanned, average 55, best 92, only four at 80 or above, unanimous on the missing crawler policy (DiamondBack Advertising, "The State of AI Search in Legal" (84 NC law firms, Aug 2026)). The full report and method are public at The State of AI Search in Legal. For firms weighing a switch, we also published what to check about website ownership and leaving an agency.

Scores are DiamondBack's 20-point technical scan of what AI systems can read on a site, run before and after with the same engine. They measure readability, not citation frequency.

FAQ

Straight answers for law firms

Why does AI SEO matter more for law firms than other businesses?

Because legal questions are private, urgent and hard to type as keywords, so people ask an AI assistant first, and because legal clicks are the most expensive to buy. When the answer names two or three firms, being one of them replaces a click that costs tens of dollars.

What schema should a law firm use?

LegalService or Attorney (both schema.org LocalBusiness subtypes) sitewide, a Service node on each practice-area page, Person nodes for attorneys with bar admissions, FAQPage on real FAQs, and aggregateRating only where the reviews are visible.

Do state bar advertising rules apply to AI answers?

The rules apply to what you publish, and an AI quotes what you publish. Keep every statement substantiable, avoid guarantees and unverifiable superlatives, and handle results language the way your bar requires. We write to that standard and flag anything that needs the firm's review.

What did DiamondBack's law firm study find?

84 North Carolina firms already in Google's organic top 25 for high-intent searches averaged 55 out of 100. 100 percent had no AI crawler policy, 82 percent no review markup, 81 percent no Service schema, 81 percent inconsistent NAP, 79 percent no FAQ markup.

Will this replace our current legal marketing agency?

No. It layers on top of ranking work and does not conflict with it. If your agency owns your site, though, read our ownership audit first; installing signals on a site you cannot leave with is a poor investment.

How fast can a firm see results?

The install takes about two weeks and the rescan proves it landed. Being named in answers compounds over months with reviews and content. No one can promise a citation by a date.
