The State of AI Search in the Piedmont Triad
We ran our 20-point AI visibility scan on 79 real Triad businesses — the same scan we run for paying clients — to answer one question: when your customers ask ChatGPT, Google AI, or Perplexity for a recommendation, can the machines even see you? The short answer: mostly, no.
The average Triad business is less than half as visible to AI as it could be. The median was 44 — this isn’t a few stragglers dragging the number down. It’s everyone.
Not one of 79 businesses scored 80 or higher. The best performer in the entire sample still left a quarter of its visibility on the table.
The top ten businesses averaged 61; the bottom ten averaged 27. The gap between leaders and laggards is already more than double — and compounding.
Two-thirds of the market is functionally invisible.
75 of 79 businesses scored below 60. When an AI assistant assembles an answer about their market, it has almost nothing reliable to read about them — so it improvises from directories, old citations, or their competitors.
The eight gaps, ranked.
Every gap below is fixable. That’s what makes this data an opportunity rather than an obituary — for whoever moves first.
AI recommends who it can read. Almost nobody is readable.
Search engines rank pages; answer engines recommend businesses — usually two or three by name. Those recommendations are built from machine-readable signals: structured data, answer-shaped content, consistent identity, readable reviews. In the Triad today, those signals barely exist. Which means the first businesses in each market to publish them don’t just improve — they become the answer, because the machines have nothing else to cite.
The bar is a 43.
You don’t need to be perfect to win your market’s AI answers. You need to be readable, consistent, and answer-shaped — before your competitor is. Every check in this study is fixable in weeks, not years.
We scored 58. Now we score 99.
Before rebuilding our own site, we ran this exact scan on us: 58/100 — missing llms.txt, inconsistent phone numbers, schema hidden from crawlers. We took our own medicine first — and this site now scores 99/100, the only 80+ we’ve ever measured. Every fix is one from this report’s gap list.
How we measured.
79 Piedmont Triad businesses (1–50 employees, across Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and surrounding cities), scanned August 2026 with our automated 20-point engine: structured data, AI-crawler access, answer-shaped content, identity consistency, and page delivery. No manual scoring, no cherry-picking; 9 additional sites couldn’t be scanned and were excluded.
We ran the same scan on a single industry.
This study looks at local business across the Triad. We also pointed the same 20-point engine at 84 North Carolina law firm websites, all of them already ranking on Google, to see whether winning at traditional SEO carries over. Read The State of AI Search in Legal.
